Welcome to the Diocese of Lake Charles

LAKE CHARLES – The Healing Family Breakdown Spiritual Workshop, sponsored by The Ruth Institute and led by Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, will be held at St. Henry Catholic Church on Saturday, Aug. 26, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.. The church is located at 1021 Eighth Avenue.  Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m.

Are you the adult child of divorce and feel alone in your struggles and pain? Did you contribute to your family’s breakdown, but would like to make amends? This workshop can help.

Though not group therapy, the Healing Family Breakdown Spiritual Workshop can give you the tools you need to forgive others, help heal your own family, and promote healing to families in one’s community
.

The workshop covers various forms of family breakdown, including divorce, cohabitation, single parenthood, third party reproduction and more.  Participants will be encouraged to focus on and pray for an individual who has either been adversely affected by family breakdown, or who contributed to it. Participants will also be taught what cultural factors helped encourage family breakdown, how family breakdown affects the individual and society, and how to promote healing within one’s own family.

“Millions of people have been harmed by family breakdown,” Dr.  Morse, founder of The Ruth Institute, an organization that helps those affected by the Sexual Revolution, said. “Most of them do not get the chance to heal, or to even acknowledge that have been harmed. Trauma that is not healed just gets worse over time.  Acknowledging people’s pain is a simple matter of justice: too many people are socially invisible.”

According to The Ruth Institute, there are 45 million children of divorce, and 29 million children of never-married parents in the United States.

“The Ruth Institute offers these workshops as an invitation to a lifetime of healing, learning and service. We are creating a nationwide network to fight family breakdown. We hope people will feel better, and be excited to be part of something bigger than their own situation,” Morse said.

This is the first time the workshop will be hosted by St. Henry, but the third time it has been offered in the Diocese of Lake Charles.  “As St. John Paul II said in 1986, 'As the family goes, so goes the nation, and so goes the whole world in which we live,’” Fr. Jeffrey Starkovich, pastor of St. Henry, said of the importance of hosting the workshop.

“The parish is a place where families gather together to worship God and learn about our faith. Undoubtedly, every parish has families that experience the pain and suffering that result when families experience suffering of various forms,” Starkovich said. “Divorce, for example, is experienced by so many, and it changed the members of that family in untold ways.  A church parish is a place families come to be strengthened and find healing from whatever ails them. I hope that the workshop helps families heal from the pain they have experienced.”

The workshop is $30 for individuals, $50 for families, and $15 for students. It’s free for religious and clergy. Participants can register by going to www.ruthinstitute.org/events. Registration forms are also available in the St. Henry Church office.  A children’s program will be available for children over age 2, at $5 per family.
