HISTORY: A Communion of Saints Not A Competition

In the summer of 2015 Xavier University of Louisiana, XULA, under the leadership of the university’s president, Dr. Norman Francis, hosted the very first “Symposium of the Saints”. It offered a lecture series married to a prayerful day of reflection on all the American sainthood candidates that are of African ancestry.  Dr. Pamela Franco, interim director of the Institute for Black Catholic Studies of XULA, facilitated the planning, offered live streaming and the published the proceedings of all lectures given at the event.

The radio broadcast of the 9:30 a.m. Mass each Sunday from the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception has been temporarily suspended due to the closure of the Cathedral and the restoration work being done in the structure. The airing of the Mass will return  on KLCL (1470-AM) and KJEF-AM (1290-AM) in Jennings as well as on Radio Maria 91.1 FM once the inside work has been completed

The Magi “opened their treasures and offered the baby Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” The Magi brought their best.
Christmas is about “gift,” but not “gift” as we commonly think. A great deal of time and energy is spent on gift giving. However, when God wanted to give us His most important gift, He did so in a Bethlehem stable. And while the Magi made precious and expensive offerings, the object of their adoration was an innocent baby lying in a manger. Let us offer ourselves to the Son of God, putting aside selfishness and offering our love of God and neighbor. I join my fellow Catholics in extending to you our prayers for a joyful Christmas!
