LAKE CHARLES ---A list of afternoon Masses celebrated in the Novus Ordo at churches of the Diocese of Lake Charles – on Saturday and Sunday – is found below. This information is provided to assist Catholics who may be traveling and arrive home late on Sunday, shift workers at our local industries, and all others who may wish to attend a later afternoon Mass on the weekend.

In what may be a unique circumstance as regards men studying for the priesthood, five of the 16 seminarians of the Diocese of Lake Charles are related – three are grandchildren of Sam and Barbara Ange and there are two other cousins. LAKE CHARLES -- Bishop Glen John Provost has appointed a nine-member Pastor Advisory Committee to assist him in making a final decision about moving forward with a capital campaign in the Diocese to aid a number of projects, including creating increased endowments for seminarian education and priest retirement.

LAKE CHARLES – Summer is quickly waning for the students and teachers of the seven Catholic schools in the Diocese of Lake Charles with opening days approaching.

LAKE CHARLES -- Mrs. Janice Conoly Picard and Mrs. J.A. Landry were named the newest members of the St. Louis Catholic High School Hall of Fame on Sunday, October 11, 2015. The ceremony was held after Mass in the school’s Commons.

LAKE CHARLES – Sixteen men studying for the priesthood for the Diocese of Lake Charles will return to their seminary courses later this month in three different seminaries in the United States and Italy.

On September 1, 2015, His Holiness, Pope Francis announced that all priests during the upcoming Year of Mercy will have the faculty to forgive the sin of abortion. The Diocese of Lake Charles wants to assure the faithful that all priests serving in the Diocese of Lake Charles have had for many years the faculty to forgive the sin of abortion and to lift the canonical penalty if incurred. It is common practice in the United States for Ordinaries to grant this faculty.

“Bishop Provost contacted the Diocese of Lafayette and personally offered his condolences and thoughts to the victims and their families, as well as all involved in this tragic event at a local movie theater.   The Bishop added, ‘The faithful of our Diocese stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Lafayette, extending our support and prayers.   May our faith be strengthened at this time of trial.’”  

LAKE CHARLES -- The hours of operation of the Office of Catholic Schools will change to better serve the faithful, parishes, and Catholic schools of the Diocese of Lake Charles, effective Monday, August 24, according the Very Reverend Ruben J. Buller, Moderator of the Curia. The new office hours will be 8 a.m. through 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

In the U.S. Supreme Court case, Obergefell v. Hodges, the opinion of the five-member majority creates the legal right of two persons of the same gender to marry one another. At the same time, the opinion states, “[I]t must be emphasized that religions, and those who adhere to religious doctrines, may continue to advocate with utmost, sincere conviction that, by divine precepts, same-sex marriage should not be condoned.”
