Information and Announcements About The Diocese

On September 1, 2015, His Holiness, Pope Francis announced that all priests during the Year of Mercy would have the faculty to forgive the sin of abortion. At the conclusion of the Year of Mercy on the Feast of Christ the King, November 20, 2016, Pope Francis announced that all of the priests of the world would retain this faculty indefinitely. The Diocese of Lake Charles wants to assure the Christian faithful that all priests serving in the Diocese of Lake Charles have had for many years the faculty to forgive the sin of abortion and to lift the canonical penalty if incurred. It is common practice in the United States for Ordinaries to grant this faculty.

I thought myself in two different worlds recently when after celebrating the feast of St. Teresa of Avila (October 15, 2016), I read the daily papers report of comments on Catholicism by certain individuals associated with a particular political campaign.    The contrast could not have been greater.   First, the world of St. Teresa.

LAKE CHARLES – The situation in a number of communities in the eastern areas of the Diocese of Lake Charles is very serious. Today’s 4 p.m. mandatory evacuation deadline for the Town of Lake Arthur was pushed back 24 hours until Tuesday at 4 p.m., according to authorities, though that it is subject to change.

JENNINGS -- Our Lady Immaculate Catholic School is closed today as are all Jefferson Davis Parish public schools. Our Lady Immaculate will reopen Tuesday as are public schools in the communities of Elton, Fenton, Hathaway, Jennings, and Lacassine. Public schools in the Jefferson Davis Parish communities of Lake Arthur, Roanoke and Welsh will remain closed on Tuesday.

(Bishop Provost preached the following as a homily for the 18th Sunday of the Year.)
We have been greatly troubled by the occurrences of the last few weeks and months. Terrorist attacks have become more frequent, and violence, it would seem, is becoming a way of life. In a news report I read recently our own State of Louisiana was cited as being one of the most violent. We see only the escalation of violent crimes and the abuse of human dignity. What is one to do?
